Wait! Before You Build, Let’s Talk About Your Windows.

Building a new home is exciting. You’re choosing everything from flooring and cabinetry to lighting, paint colors, and all those little details that make a house your own.
But there’s one decision that often gets overlooked until the home is nearly finished.
Your window treatments.
And here’s something I wish every homeowner knew before construction begins: If you’re considering motorized shades, now is the perfect time to plan for hardwiring.
Before the drywall goes up, talk with your builder about incorporating power for motorized window treatments into your electrical plan.
Why? Because planning ahead can eliminate the need for batteries or recharging, reduce visible wiring, and make it easier to integrate your shades with compatible smart-home systems.
Even if you’re not ready to purchase your window treatments, discussing your future plans before electrical rough-in can save time and provide more options later.
Pamela’s Designer Tip: Have your window treatment specialist involved early. Not all motorized shades have the same power requirements, and wiring location depends on the product, mounting style, and window dimensions. Your electrician and window treatment specialist should coordinate before installation.

1. Motorization: A Smart Decision Before the Walls Go Up
One of the biggest changes I’ve seen in window treatments over the years is how seamlessly technology has become part of everyday living.
Imagine waking up to natural light as your bedroom shades open automatically. Or having the shades in your living room close in the evening for privacy without walking from window to window.
For homes with large expanses of glass, tall windows, or multiple shades in one room, motorization can be especially convenient. And in a new construction home, you have an advantage: the opportunity to plan for it from the beginning.
Hardwired motorized shades offer a clean, convenient solution without the routine maintenance of battery-powered systems.
Of course, hardwiring isn’t the only option. Today’s rechargeable and battery-powered motorized shades are excellent alternatives, especially when wiring isn’t practical. But if you’re building a home in Stillwater or Lake Elmo, it’s worth having that conversation before the electrical work is completed.
2. Beautiful Windows Deserve a Plan
One thing I love about newer homes is the emphasis on natural light.
Large picture windows, expansive patio doors, and open living spaces create a wonderful connection between indoors and out. But those beautiful windows also need thoughtful planning. Consider how the sunlight moves through your home during the day.
Will your living room have strong afternoon sun? Will your bedroom need room-darkening shades? Will those beautiful patio doors need privacy once evening arrives? And just as importantly, how do you want your window treatments to look when they’re open?
Pamela’s Designer Tip: The best window treatments complement the architecture rather than compete with it. For large windows, I often recommend exploring clean-lined solutions that provide the function you need while keeping the view as open as possible.
3. Creating a Beautiful Flow in Open-Concept Homes
Open-concept living remains popular in new construction throughout Stillwater and Lake Elmo.
Kitchens flow into dining areas, which connect to living rooms and outdoor spaces. It’s wonderful for entertaining and everyday family life. But when you can see several rooms at once, window treatments become an important part of the overall design.
That doesn’t mean every window needs the same treatment. Instead, I like to create continuity through coordinated fabrics, colors, textures, and operating styles.
For example, streamlined roller shades in the main living area might coordinate beautifully with woven wood shades in a nearby dining space. Or a consistent shade style throughout the open floor plan can be softened with custom drapery in the living room.
The goal is a home that feels connected, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed.

4. Window Treatments That Work Beautifully in New Construction
Today’s window treatments offer more choices than ever, making it easier to find something that fits both your home’s architecture and your lifestyle.
Roller Shades
Clean, simple, and versatile. Roller shades are especially attractive in contemporary homes and on larger windows where you want a streamlined look.
Woven Wood Shades
A beautiful way to introduce warmth and natural texture. Woven woods pair wonderfully with wood flooring, neutral finishes, and the organic materials popular in today’s homes.
Cellular Shades
An excellent choice for homeowners who want privacy, light control, and insulating benefits in a soft, understated design.
Custom Drapery
Even modern homes benefit from a little softness. Drapery can add texture, color, and personality while beautifully framing large windows.
Motorized Shades
From everyday convenience to smart-home integration, motorized shades are worth considering throughout the home, particularly for large windows, hard-to-reach spaces, and rooms with multiple window treatments.
5. Don’t Overlook Privacy in a New Neighborhood
Here’s something homeowners sometimes discover after moving into a newly constructed neighborhood.
Those beautiful windows that provide wonderful daylight can feel a little exposed once the sun goes down. In newer developments, landscaping may still be growing, neighboring homes may be close together, and mature trees may not be there to provide natural screening.
That’s why you should consider privacy early in the design process. Light-filtering shades can be wonderful for living spaces, while bedrooms and bathrooms often require greater privacy. Depending on the fabric, some light-filtering materials may allow silhouettes to show at night when interior lights are on.
The right solution lets you enjoy the sunlight without sacrificing your comfort.

6. You Don’t Have to Finish Every Window at Once
Building a new home involves plenty of decisions, and plenty of expenses!
One thing I often remind homeowners is that window treatments don’t necessarily need to be completed all at once. Start with the spaces where privacy, sunlight, and daily comfort matter most. Maybe that’s the primary bedroom, the living room with afternoon glare, or the patio doors that everyone uses throughout the day. Then build on those choices as you settle into your home.
The important thing is having an overall plan. That way, even if your window treatments are installed in stages, the finished home can still feel beautifully coordinated.
And if you’re considering hardwired motorization, planning the wiring early is especially important, even if the shades themselves come later.
A Little Planning Now, Beautiful Living Later
One of the most rewarding parts of designing a new home is seeing all those individual decisions come together. The flooring, cabinetry, lighting, furnishings, and architectural details create the foundation.
But it’s the finishing touches that make a house feel like home. And window treatments are so much more than a finishing touch. They shape how you experience natural light, how comfortable your rooms feel, and how easily your home supports your everyday routines.
So before the drywall goes up, take a moment to think about your windows. It’s one of those decisions you’ll be glad you considered early.
Here’s to loving where you live.
