Fall Is Here: Let Your Home Change With the Season

Simple ways to make your home feel warmer, brighter and more comfortable as the days grow shorter.

By Pamela Brown

A welcoming living room combines soft neutral furnishings, autumn foliage, and warm natural light.

Fall officially arrived this week, and here in the St. Croix Valley, we’re beginning to see and feel those little changes that come with a new season.

The mornings are cooler, the sun is setting earlier, and I’m finding myself reaching for a jacket when I head outside. We’re not quite ready to give up those beautiful days on the patio, but inside, our homes are beginning to feel different too.

That’s one of the things I love about living in this part of the country. Our homes change right along with the seasons. The way we use our rooms, the light coming through our windows, even the things that make us feel comfortable all begin to shift.

And fall might be my favorite time to embrace it.

Follow the Fall Light

One of the first changes I notice isn’t the temperature. It’s the light.

The sun sits lower in the sky, sending that beautiful golden glow deeper into our homes. It can make a room look completely different, but it can also create glare in spaces that weren’t a problem during the summer.

This is the time of year when I start paying more attention to how we use our window treatments throughout the day. Instead of keeping shades closed to block summer heat, we may want them wide open on a sunny fall morning, then adjusted later when that lower afternoon sun becomes too bright.

Let that beautiful fall light in when you can. There’s a warmth to it that you just can’t duplicate.

Windows Change With the Seasons Too

During summer, we often think about keeping heat and intense sunlight out. As fall settles in, that changes. A sunny window can be something we want to take advantage of during the day, while at night that same expanse of glass can make a room feel cooler.

This is where window treatments do a lot more than decorate a room. Opening shades when the sun is shining can allow natural light and warmth into the house. Closing them as temperatures drop adds another layer between your living space and the glass.

Some treatments do this particularly well. Cellular shades use pockets of air to create an insulating layer at the window. Lined drapery can add softness and another layer of comfort. Even simply getting into the habit of opening and closing the treatments you already have at the right times of day can help your home work a little smarter.

We talk so much about thermostats, furnaces and insulation when we think about energy efficiency that it’s easy to overlook the windows. But what we put on them, and how we use it, can be part of the equation too.

Good design should work as beautifully as it looks.

Privacy Starts Earlier

There’s another seasonal change we don’t always think about until suddenly we’re standing in a brightly lit kitchen and it’s completely dark outside.

During summer, our shades and drapery might stay open until eight or nine o’clock. As the days shorten, we start closing them much earlier for privacy.

It’s a small thing, but it changes a room’s feel. Closing the shades and drawing the drapery almost becomes part of settling in for the evening.

For homes with motorized window treatments, scheduling them to adjust around sunrise and sunset can be especially nice this time of year. I love technology most when it quietly makes everyday life easier without making it feel more complicated.

Bring Back the Layers

Fall always makes me want a little more softness around the house, but that doesn’t mean every room needs pumpkins, leaves and seasonal signs.

Sometimes warmth comes from texture rather than decoration.

Bring the throws back out. Add a pillow with a little more texture. Pull out the heavier bedding. Bring in some branches, hydrangeas or other natural elements from outside.

Fabric at the windows can create that same effect. Drapery adds softness and movement, and when layered over a shade, it can make an entire room feel warmer and more finished.

You don’t necessarily need more things. Sometimes you just need another layer.

Make the Evenings Feel Different

One of my favorite things about fall is the return of evenings at home.

As it gets dark earlier, lighting becomes part of the decorating. Instead of relying on one bright overhead fixture, turn on lamps at different heights around the room. Light a candle. Let the fireplace become the focal point again.

Even closing the drapery can change the mood. A room that felt bright and open during the day suddenly becomes softer and more intimate at night.

Those little rituals tell us the day is winding down.

Don’t Give Up on the Outdoors Yet

As much as I enjoy making the inside of the house cozy again, I’m never quite ready to abandon the patio.

September and early October can give us some of the best evenings of the year here in Minnesota. The air is crisp, the bugs are finally giving us a little break, and sitting outside around a fire with a blanket can be even better than a hot July evening.

Keep a basket of throws near the door. Bring out the lanterns. Add some warmer lighting. If you have outdoor shades, that lower fall sun is another reason to keep using them.

There will be plenty of time to stay inside later.

Let Home Change With You

I think we sometimes put pressure on ourselves to “decorate for fall,” when our homes naturally change with the season anyway.

We spend more time inside. We cook different foods. We reach for blankets. We turn on lamps earlier. We close the shades before dinner and start gathering around the fireplace again.

Those aren’t decorating trends. They’re simply part of living in a place where the seasons change.

And maybe that’s what I love about fall most. It reminds us that our homes don’t have to stay exactly the same all year long. They can shift with the light, the weather and the way we’re living right now.

Sometimes all it takes is opening the shades to a beautiful fall morning, pulling them closed on a chilly evening, turning on a favorite lamp and settling in.

Here’s to loving where you live, in every season.

The Art of Layering: What Makes a Room Feel Finished

By Pamela Brown

Have you ever looked around a room and thought, “I like everything in here… so why doesn’t it feel finished?”

The furniture is beautiful. The paint color works. Maybe you’ve added a rug and hung some artwork. Nothing is necessarily wrong, but somehow the room still feels a little flat.

After years in interior design, I’ve learned that what’s missing often isn’t another piece of furniture or a new paint color.

It’s layers.

Layering is one of those design ideas that sounds complicated, but it really isn’t. It’s simply combining color, texture, pattern, lighting, fabric, natural materials, and personal pieces to add depth and personality to a room. It’s what makes a beautifully furnished room feel like a home.

A cozy living room featuring a dark couch with decorative pillows, a coffee table with a floral arrangement, and light-filtering window treatments. The space has natural light flowing in from large windows framed by vertical curtains.

Start With What You Already Have

Before you go shopping, take a good look around the room.

What do you already love? Maybe it’s the color of your sofa, an antique table, a favorite piece of artwork, or a rug you’ve had for years. Those pieces can become the foundation, and everything else can build from there.

I always tell people that a room doesn’t need to be filled with new things to feel new. Sometimes moving a lamp, pulling a chair away from the wall, adding a throw, or bringing something in from another room is enough to start seeing the space differently.

Texture May Be What’s Missing

One of the easiest ways to make a room feel more interesting is to mix textures.

Think about the difference between a room filled entirely with smooth surfaces and one that combines soft linen, warm wood, woven materials, glass, metal, and a cozy rug. Even when everything is in a similar color palette, those different textures give your eye somewhere to go.

This is especially helpful if you love neutrals. A neutral room doesn’t have to be boring. In fact, some of the most beautiful neutral spaces I’ve seen have very little color—they’re interesting because of the layers.

A woven basket next to a linen chair. A chunky throw over a smooth leather sofa. Wood against stone. Drapery next to a woven shade.

Contrast makes each piece more beautiful.

Everything Doesn’t Have to Match

Warm sophisticated layered Midwest living room

This may be one of the most important things I’ve learned as a designer: a room usually feels more interesting when everything isn’t perfectly matched.

Your end tables don’t have to be identical. Not every wood tone needs to match. Your pillows don’t need to match your rug exactly, and your window treatments don’t have to disappear into the wall color.

Instead, look for things that relate to one another.

Maybe a warm tone in the rug shows up again in a pillow. A black metal lamp relates to the hardware across the room. A woven shade picks up the warmth of a wood table.

Those little connections make a room feel intentional without feeling overly decorated.

Don’t Forget the Windows

Windows are often one of the largest design elements in a room, yet they’re sometimes the last thing people think about.

This is where layering can make an enormous difference.

A beautiful shade may provide privacy and light control, but adding drapery can bring softness, movement, color, and texture to the entire room. Woven woods paired with fabric are one of my favorite combinations because they combine the shade’s natural texture with drapery’s softness.

And layering isn’t only about appearance. It can also give you more control over light, privacy, and how cozy a room feels as our Minnesota weather starts to cool.

The best window treatments should look like they belong to the room—not like they were added afterward.

Lighting Is a Layer Too

You can have a beautifully decorated room and still have it feel wrong if the lighting isn’t right.

Overhead lighting has its place, but I rarely want it to do all the work. Table lamps, floor lamps, and accent lighting create pools of light at different heights, which immediately make a room feel warmer and more inviting.

As our days get shorter here in the St. Croix Valley, I notice this even more. Turning on a couple of lamps in the evening instead of one bright overhead fixture can completely change a room’s mood.

And yes, I’m a big believer in candles too.

Add Something That Tells Your Story

This may be my favorite layer of all.

The most memorable homes aren’t the ones where everything looks like it came from the same showroom. They’re the ones that tell you something about the people who live there.

Family photographs. Something you brought home from a trip. Your grandmother’s bowl. A stack of books you actually read. A piece of art you fell in love with for no particular reason.

Those things don’t have to follow a decorating rule.

They belong because they’re yours.

Know When to Stop

Cozy living room featuring a green sofa, a wooden coffee table with books and cups, an armchair, and framed artwork on the walls, with plants by the window.

Layering doesn’t mean adding things until every surface is full.

In fact, editing is just as important as adding. Your eye needs places to rest, and sometimes removing one thing makes everything around it look better.

If a room starts feeling busy, take something away and live with it for a day or two. I do this all the time. Decorating isn’t always about finding what else a room needs—sometimes it’s figuring out what it doesn’t.

The Finishing Touch

When a room feels finished, you probably won’t walk in and immediately notice the rug, the lamp, the drapery or the basket in the corner.

You’ll notice how the room feels.

Warm. Comfortable. Interesting. Personal.

That’s the beauty of layering. No single piece has to be the star. Everything simply works together to create a space that feels collected rather than decorated.

And after all my years in design, I still think a home is at its very best when it doesn’t look like someone designed it.

It simply looks like you live beautifully there.

Until next month…

Here’s to loving where you live.

From Summer to Fall: Simple Ways to Transition Your Home for the Season

Leaf-covered woodland trail beneath vibrant autumn foliage and sunlight
Sunlight streams through vibrant fall foliage along a peaceful woodland trail.

By Pamela Brown

There’s something about August in Minnesota. We’re still very much enjoying summer, but the little signs of fall are beginning to sneak in. The evenings get a little cooler, the sun sets a little earlier, and before long, I find myself thinking about making the house feel just a bit cozier.

But I’m never quite ready to give up summer!

The good news is that transitioning your home from summer to fall doesn’t require a complete decorating overhaul. In fact, after many years in interior design, I’ve found that the most beautiful seasonal changes are often the simplest ones. A few layers, a little texture, and some warmer touches can completely change how a room feels.

Don’t Rush Summer Out the Door

There’s no rule that says September means the bright, airy feeling of summer has to disappear. Instead of replacing everything, start adding to what you already have.

Keep the lighter colors and natural elements you love, then begin layering in warmer textures. A soft throw over the arm of a chair, a textured pillow on the sofa, or a woven basket near the fireplace can subtly shift a room toward fall without making it feel heavy.

I especially love mixing summer neutrals with warm caramel, rust, olive, deep green and muted gold. You don’t need much. Even one or two touches can change the entire mood of a room.

Shop Your Own Home First

This is one of my favorite decorating tricks, and it doesn’t cost a thing.

Before buying new fall décor, walk through your house and look at what you already own. That throw folded in the guest room might be perfect on the living room sofa. A pottery bowl tucked away in a cabinet could become a beautiful centerpiece. Move a lamp, switch a couple of pillows, or bring a basket from one room into another.

Sometimes simply rearranging what you already have makes everything feel new again.

Bring a Little of the Outdoors In

Late summer and early fall give us some of the prettiest natural decorating materials of the year, especially here in the St. Croix Valley.

Clip a few hydrangeas from the yard. Fill a vase with branches or late-summer greenery. Add a bowl of apples to the kitchen island. Natural wood, woven baskets, pottery and greenery all bring warmth into a room without making it scream “fall décor.”

And yes, eventually I love a beautiful pumpkin too. Just maybe not quite yet.

Add Layers and Texture

If there’s one decorating element that instantly makes a room feel warmer, it’s texture.

Think chunky throws, linen, velvet, woven materials, natural woods and soft rugs. You don’t need all of them. Choose a few that fit your existing style.

This is also the time of year when I start thinking about windows differently. During summer, we’re focused on keeping rooms bright and controlling heat and glare. As fall approaches, softness and warmth start to feel especially inviting.

Layering a shade with drapery is one of my favorite ways to add both. The shade handles privacy and light control while the fabric adds softness, texture, and that finished feeling that can completely transform a room.

Pay Attention to the Light

One of the first things I notice as summer winds down is how the light changes.

The sun sits lower in the sky, shadows become longer, and we’re turning lamps on earlier in the evening. It’s a great time to look around your home and notice where you might need a little more warmth.

Rather than relying only on overhead lighting, try layering your light just as you layer your décor. Table lamps, floor lamps, and small accent lights create a softer atmosphere and make rooms feel much more inviting as the evenings get darker.

And don’t forget candles. A few candles glowing in the evening might be the easiest fall decorating trick of all.

Keep Enjoying the Outdoors

Just because cooler evenings arrive doesn’t mean patio season is over.

In fact, some of my favorite outdoor evenings happen at the end of summer and beginning of fall. Add a couple of throws to the patio chairs, bring out the lanterns, and enjoy dinner outside while you still can.

Here in Minnesota, we know what’s coming. We might as well squeeze every last evening out of outdoor season!

Let Your Home Change With the Season

I think that’s what I love most about this time of year. Summer doesn’t disappear overnight. It slowly gives way to cooler mornings, earlier sunsets, and the familiar routines of fall.

Our homes can make that transition the same way.

You don’t have to redecorate everything or follow every seasonal trend. Add a little warmth. Move a few things around. Bring something beautiful in from the yard. Layer in some texture and turn on the lamps a little earlier.

Sometimes the smallest changes are the ones that make us fall in love with our homes all over again.

Until next month…

Here’s to loving where you live.

Four Benefits of Home Automation

 1. Peace of Mind

With home automation, you can control almost everything in your home from securing your alarm system to controlling your window coverings. Smart home technology can provide a certain level of comfort- after all, your home is the place you should feel the safest. With the help of smart home systems, you’re able to turn lighting on or off and open or close your window coverings at all times to make it seem like someone is home even when you’re not. It is a way for technology to provide peace of mind when it comes to your family and their safety.

2. Convenience

Your household may be chaotic, but smart devices are here to make life a whole lot easier. Having these systems in your home make it easy for you to enjoy automated lights, shades, even music at the touch of a button or with a simple command. This technology was invented to make life easier for you.

3. Energy Efficiency

Did you know that you can save money on your energy bill with home automation? It’s estimated that we lose over 50% of our home’s heating and cooling through the windows. So rather than cranking up your heat or air conditioning to avoid uncomfortable temperatures in your home, consider automated Smart Shades by Budget Blinds. These automated shades can be controlled with the touch of a button or with your favorite smartphone or tablet.

4. Child Safety

As a parent, your number one concern is your child’s safety. It is important to not overlook basic household items such as window coverings when childproofing your home. Smart home technology can be a major benefit for parents. Having automated shades by Budget Blinds can eliminate dangerous dangling cords out of a child’s reach keeping them safe around all windows.

Simply put, smart home technology is life changing. From security and light control to child safety, the benefits are endless.
