From Summer to Fall: Simple Ways to Transition Your Home for the Season

By Pamela Brown

There’s something about August in Minnesota. We’re still very much enjoying summer, but the little signs of fall are beginning to sneak in. The evenings get a little cooler, the sun sets a little earlier, and before long, I find myself thinking about making the house feel just a bit cozier.

But I’m never quite ready to give up summer!

The good news is that transitioning your home from summer to fall doesn’t require a complete decorating overhaul. In fact, after many years in interior design, I’ve found that the most beautiful seasonal changes are often the simplest ones. A few layers, a little texture, and some warmer touches can completely change how a room feels.

Don’t Rush Summer Out the Door

There’s no rule that says September means the bright, airy feeling of summer has to disappear. Instead of replacing everything, start adding to what you already have.

Keep the lighter colors and natural elements you love, then begin layering in warmer textures. A soft throw over the arm of a chair, a textured pillow on the sofa, or a woven basket near the fireplace can subtly shift a room toward fall without making it feel heavy.

I especially love mixing summer neutrals with warm caramel, rust, olive, deep green and muted gold. You don’t need much. Even one or two touches can change the entire mood of a room.

Shop Your Own Home First

This is one of my favorite decorating tricks, and it doesn’t cost a thing.

Before buying new fall décor, walk through your house and look at what you already own. That throw folded in the guest room might be perfect on the living room sofa. A pottery bowl tucked away in a cabinet could become a beautiful centerpiece. Move a lamp, switch a couple of pillows, or bring a basket from one room into another.

Sometimes simply rearranging what you already have makes everything feel new again.

Bring a Little of the Outdoors In

Late summer and early fall give us some of the prettiest natural decorating materials of the year, especially here in the St. Croix Valley.

Clip a few hydrangeas from the yard. Fill a vase with branches or late-summer greenery. Add a bowl of apples to the kitchen island. Natural wood, woven baskets, pottery and greenery all bring warmth into a room without making it scream “fall décor.”

And yes, eventually I love a beautiful pumpkin too. Just maybe not quite yet.

Add Layers and Texture

If there’s one decorating element that instantly makes a room feel warmer, it’s texture.

Think chunky throws, linen, velvet, woven materials, natural woods and soft rugs. You don’t need all of them. Choose a few that fit your existing style.

This is also the time of year when I start thinking about windows differently. During summer, we’re focused on keeping rooms bright and controlling heat and glare. As fall approaches, softness and warmth start to feel especially inviting.

Layering a shade with drapery is one of my favorite ways to add both. The shade handles privacy and light control while the fabric adds softness, texture, and that finished feeling that can completely transform a room.

Pay Attention to the Light

One of the first things I notice as summer winds down is how the light changes.

The sun sits lower in the sky, shadows become longer, and we’re turning lamps on earlier in the evening. It’s a great time to look around your home and notice where you might need a little more warmth.

Rather than relying only on overhead lighting, try layering your light just as you layer your décor. Table lamps, floor lamps, and small accent lights create a softer atmosphere and make rooms feel much more inviting as the evenings get darker.

And don’t forget candles. A few candles glowing in the evening might be the easiest fall decorating trick of all.

Keep Enjoying the Outdoors

Just because cooler evenings arrive doesn’t mean patio season is over.

In fact, some of my favorite outdoor evenings happen at the end of summer and beginning of fall. Add a couple of throws to the patio chairs, bring out the lanterns, and enjoy dinner outside while you still can.

Here in Minnesota, we know what’s coming. We might as well squeeze every last evening out of outdoor season!

Let Your Home Change With the Season

I think that’s what I love most about this time of year. Summer doesn’t disappear overnight. It slowly gives way to cooler mornings, earlier sunsets, and the familiar routines of fall.

Our homes can make that transition the same way.

You don’t have to redecorate everything or follow every seasonal trend. Add a little warmth. Move a few things around. Bring something beautiful in from the yard. Layer in some texture and turn on the lamps a little earlier.

Sometimes the smallest changes are the ones that make us fall in love with our homes all over again.

Until next month…

Here’s to loving where you live.

Celebrating 20 Years of Helping You Love Where You Live

Outdoor Living Edition

By Pamela Brown | Budget Blinds of Stillwater & Lake Elmo

Twenty years.

It’s hard to believe that what started as a passion for helping homeowners create beautiful spaces has grown into two decades of friendships, countless homes, and thousands of windows throughout Stillwater, Lake Elmo, and the St. Croix Valley.

Over the years, we’ve watched families grow.

We’ve helped decorate first homes, dream homes, lake homes, and forever homes.

We’ve celebrated new babies, retirements, remodels, and everything in between.

And if there’s one thing we’ve learned…

Home is more than four walls.

Especially this time of year.

Summer Happens Outside

Living in Minnesota means we appreciate every beautiful day.

The patio becomes the dining room.

The deck becomes the gathering place.

Morning coffee moves outdoors.

Grandkids run through the backyard.

Friends stay long after dinner.

Outdoor living has become an extension of the home, and we’re seeing more families invest in making those spaces as comfortable as the rooms inside.

Comfort Makes All the Difference

One thing we hear over and over from homeowners is…

“We love our patio—we just can’t use it in the afternoon.”

Maybe it’s the hot western sun.

Maybe it’s glare.

Maybe it’s the lack of privacy.

Or maybe it’s simply too warm to enjoy.

A comfortable outdoor space isn’t about making it fancy.

It’s about creating a place where your family actually wants to spend time together.

Outdoor Shades Are Changing the Way Families Enjoy Their Homes

One of the biggest trends we’re seeing throughout Stillwater, Lake Elmo, Bayport, Mahtomedi, and other areas of the St. Croix Valley is homeowners transforming patios, porches, and decks into true outdoor living spaces.

Outdoor solar shades help create:

• Cooler patios during hot summer afternoons

• Protection from glare while preserving beautiful views

• Additional privacy without feeling closed in

• Better protection for outdoor furniture from damaging UV rays

• More usable hours enjoying your favorite space

It’s amazing how one addition can completely change how often a family uses their backyard.

A Family Business

Every home matters.

Thank You

As we celebrate 20 years serving the St. Croix Valley, we’re incredibly grateful for every homeowner who has welcomed us into their home.

Many of you have become repeat customers.

Many have referred your family and friends.

Many have become friends with you.

Thank you for trusting us with your homes and allowing us to be part of your story.

Here’s to the next twenty years.

Earth Day at Home: How Window Coverings Can Help You Save Energy Year-Round

Light & Living by Pamela Brown, Budget Blinds Stillwater / Lake Elmo

🌎 Earth Day is a great reminder that small changes at home can make a big impact.

But what many homeowners don’t realize is this:
👉 Your windows are one of the biggest sources of energy loss in your home.

The good news?
The right window coverings can make a noticeable difference—both in comfort and energy use.

🏡 Why It Matters (Especially in Minnesota)

Living in Stillwater, Lake Elmo, and the surrounding St. Croix Valley, we experience it all:

  • Cold winters with heat loss through windows
  • Sunny summers that can overheat your home
  • Drafts and temperature swings near the glass

👉 Without proper window treatments, your HVAC system works overtime.

💡 How Window Coverings Help Save Energy

1. Insulation Where You Need It Most

Certain window treatments act as a barrier between your home and the outdoors.

✔ Cellular (honeycomb) shades trap air and reduce heat loss
✔ Layered treatments add another level of insulation
✔ Proper fit makes all the difference

👉 This helps keep warm air in during winter—and out during summer

2. Blocking Heat from the Sun

Sunlight is great… until it overheats your home.

✔ Solar shades reduce glare and UV rays
✔ Light-filtering options soften natural light
✔ Exterior shades can block heat before it even hits the glass

👉 Less heat inside = less strain on your cooling system

3. Smart Control with Motorization

Energy efficiency isn’t just about the product—it’s how you use it.

✔ Schedule shades to close during peak sun hours
✔ Open them to naturally warm your home in winter
✔ Control everything with the touch of a button

👉 It’s one of the simplest ways to improve efficiency without thinking about it daily

4. Layering for Maximum Performance

One of the most effective solutions we recommend:

✔ Shade for function
✔ Drapery for added insulation and style

👉 Together, they help regulate temperature while giving your home a finished, designer look

🛠 What We’re Seeing Locally

In homes across Stillwater and Lake Elmo, more homeowners are prioritizing:

  • Energy-efficient shades
  • Layered window treatments
  • Motorization for convenience and control

It’s not just about style anymore—
👉 It’s about comfort, efficiency, and long-term value

👋 A Local, Family-Owned Perspective

At Budget Blinds of Stillwater & Lake Elmo, we’re proud to be a family-owned and locally operated business.

That means we understand:

  • Our climate
  • Our homes
  • And what actually works here

We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions—
👉 We help you find what works best for your space and your lifestyle

🌱 Final Thought

This Earth Day, creating a more energy-efficient home doesn’t have to mean a major renovation.

Sometimes, it starts with something as simple—and impactful—as your window coverings.
